How I Started:
I began my military career in 1988 when I joined the British Army as a musician, completing my initial training at Catterick, Yorkshire. In 1989 I was posted to Tidworth, before moving to Münster, Germany in 1990, where I spent ten years performing across Europe and representing the Army at numerous high-profile events. During this time, I also travelled to Canada to perform at the internationally renowned Calgary Stampede. In 1999 I deployed on operations to Kosovo and performed at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Returning to the UK in 2000, I was posted to Bovington and continued to support Army music both nationally and internationally. In 2003, I deployed to Iraq in support of military operations.
From 2003 to 2014, I continued delivering military music across operational, ceremonial, and representational roles. In 2014 I was posted to Colchester, working with the Parachute Regiment and supporting commemorations for the 70th anniversaries of D-Day and the Battle of Arnhem.
Later that year, I moved to the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall in Twickenham, where I provided welfare support to musical trainees and later served as a Career Manager within the Corps of Army Music.
In 2020 I moved to Worthy Down as Band Serjeant Major with The Band and Bugles of The Rifles, where I had the honour of performing at the funeral of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. From 2022 to 2025 I was based in Andover, working within the Army’s Unacceptable Behaviours team, delivering support services to promote professional standards across the Army
Across a career spanning more than five decades, I have been privileged to represent the British Army through music around the world, support operational deployments, contribute to major ceremonial events, and help develop future generations of Army musicians.
My Greatest Achievement:
One of the greatest honours of my career was performing at the funeral of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. As Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles, Prince Philip had a long-standing connection with the regiment. During the service at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle, I performed with The Band and Bugles of The Rifles, where we had the privilege of playing the National Anthem on his arrival. Being part of such a historic national occasion remains one of the proudest moments of my military career.Alongside my military service, I have remained committed to professional development through higher education. I hold a BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Leadership, qualifications that have supported my leadership, welfare, and personnel management roles throughout my career.
