How I Started:
I began my career in the British Army in 2000, joining through the Armed Forces Career Office in Manchester. From the outset, I was immersed in a culture built on discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility. I successfully completed both basic training and Combat Engineering training, developing a strong foundation in problem-solving, adaptability, and working effectively under pressure. In 2003, I joined my first operational unit, where I transitioned from training into active service. This period was instrumental in shaping my understanding of teamwork, accountability, and the importance of maintaining high standards in demanding environments. Motivated to challenge myself further, I undertook the All Arms Commando Course in 2004, one of the most physically and mentally demanding training programmes in the Armed Forces. Successfully completing this course and earning my place within a specialist Commando Engineering unit remains one of my proudest achievements. It required resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
From this point forward, my military career truly took shape. Serving within a high-readiness Commando unit, I developed key leadership qualities, learned to perform under sustained pressure, and gained extensive experience in working within diverse and high-performing teams. These experiences instilled in me a strong sense of integrity, adaptability, and a commitment to supporting and developing others qualities that continue to underpin my professional approach today.
My Greatest Achievement:
My greatest achievement was attaining the rank and appointment of Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM), the most senior non-commissioned role within a regiment. This position demanded the consistent maintenance of the highest professional standards, alongside the ability to adapt and evolve within an ever-changing operational and organisational environment. As RSM, I was entrusted with setting the tone, values, and discipline across the unit, ensuring that expectations were not only met but upheld by all. This role was not achieved in isolation, but through years of dedication, collaboration, and a commitment to developing both myself and those around me. Central to my success was the ability to work effectively with peers, build trust, and foster a culture where individuals felt empowered to take ownership and responsibility for their actions. I took great pride in mentoring and inspiring others, helping them to recognise their potential and guiding them to achieve high standards in both their professional and personal development.
Holding this appointment required strong leadership, clear communication, and the ability to influence at all levels. It reinforced my belief in leading by example, maintaining consistency, and creating an environment where accountability, respect, and teamwork are at the forefront, principles that continue to shape my approach in all professional settings today.
My Greatest Challenge:
One of the greatest challenges I faced throughout my career was encouraging younger soldiers to take genuine ownership and responsibility for their personal and professional development. In an increasingly fast-paced and ever-changing military environment, where expectations, pressures, and distractions continue to evolve, this became both more complex and more important than ever.I quickly recognised that leadership was not simply about giving direction, but about influencing mindset, building confidence, and fostering a sense of accountability in others. Many individuals required support in developing resilience, self-discipline, and the ability to make informed decisions about their future. This meant investing time in coaching, mentoring, and having honest, sometimes difficult conversations to help them understand the impact of their choices and the value of taking pride in their role.
To address this, I focused on creating a culture where responsibility was encouraged, recognised, and embedded into everyday practice. I worked to empower individuals to set goals, reflect on their progress, and take ownership of both their successes and areas for improvement. This approach not only improved individual performance but also strengthened team cohesion and overall standards.
My Hobbies:
Outside of my professional career, I actively contribute to my local community as a football referee with Cornwall FA. This role allows me to support grassroots sport while promoting fairness, respect, and integrity, values that are essential both on and off the field. Refereeing requires clear communication, sound judgement, and the ability to manage challenging situations with confidence and impartiality, often under pressure. I take pride in helping to create a positive and inclusive environment where players of all ages can enjoy and develop through sport. In my personal life, I am equally committed to supporting and developing my two daughters across a range of activities, including swimming, cross-country, and cricket. Through this, I have developed a strong appreciation for the importance of encouragement, consistency, and creating opportunities for young people to grow in confidence and resilience. I value the role that sport and active lifestyles play in building character, teamwork, and self-belief, and I am passionate about supporting young people to achieve their full potential. These experiences, both within the community and at home, reflect my broader commitment to nurturing development, promoting positive values, and supporting others to succeed, principles that strongly align with an educational environment.
My Future Aspirations:
In my current role with Airbus, I am committed to continuous professional development, striving to enhance my knowledge, skills, and performance on a daily basis. I take a proactive approach to meeting and exceeding targets, recognising that consistent growth and high standards are essential not only for my own career progression but also for contributing positively to the wider organisation.Alongside my personal development, I am deeply motivated to support others in reaching their full potential. I actively seek opportunities to engage with development programmes and initiatives that encourage individuals to take ownership and responsibility for their own progression. By sharing my experience and promoting a mindset of accountability and self-improvement, I aim to inspire others to build confidence, set meaningful goals, and achieve success in their own careers.
I strongly believe that fostering a culture of continuous improvement and personal responsibility is key to both individual and collective success. This approach underpins my professional ethos and aligns closely with environments where growth, support, and high expectations are valued.
